The Reading / Listening - Level 4

The UK will pilot a scheme to help mentally ill people in police stations. Mental health nurses will work with them across England. They will spot those with problems earlier, so they get the right treatment. A UK minister explained he wanted to stop people committing crimes, and reduce the suffering of victims. The police said officers needed to focus on fighting crime, and people with mental health conditions needed to get the care they need quickly.

The project could change how the police force uses staff and resources. Officers spend up to 25 per cent of their time dealing with people with mental health problems. A mental health charity welcomed the new project. It said Britain's justice system often frustrated those with mental health problems, police officers and others. It believes the project could stop people going unnecessarily to prison and save millions in taxpayers' money.
