The Reading / Listening - Level 0

Thousands of people wake up in operations every year. Doctors say this is unusual. It happens once in every 19,000 operations. Drugs relax patients so they cannot move. They cannot speak. They cannot tell the doctor they are awake. Patients who wake up feel afraid. They sometimes panic.

Researchers looked at three million operations. They used data to find 64 ways to make operations safer. They wanted fewer accidents. They said doctors should use a checklist before each operation. Doctors will check the patient has the right drugs. A monitor can tell doctors if a patient wakes up.
