The 2-page handout

The reading

Researchers have stated that Donald Trump winning the US presidency is one of the top ten risks facing the world. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) warns that a president Trump could disrupt the world's economy and increase political tensions worldwide. It said a Trump victory in November's U.S. presidential elections could also lead to global insecurity. The EIU puts Mr Trump on the same level of risk as, "the rising threat of jihadi terrorism destabilising the global economy". A reason for Mr Trump's high ranking is a lack of information about his proposed plans. The EIU said: "Thus far, Mr Trump has given very few details of his policies, and these tend to be prone to constant revision."

The EIU rated Mr Trump as being riskier than the United Kingdom leaving the European Union or an armed confrontation in the South China Sea. He was seen as less dangerous than China encountering a sharp economic slowdown and Russia's foreign policy in Ukraine and Syria resulting in a new cold war. The EIU said Mr Trump has got many people worried by his rhetoric towards Mexico and China, which "could escalate rapidly into a trade war". Mr Trump has called for a "big, big wall" to be built on the US-Mexican border to keep "illegal immigrants" and "drug dealers" out of the United States. He even said he would get Mexico to pay for it. He has also called for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the USA.
