Cote d-Ivoire 0 Portugal 0 (15th June, 2010)

This game had the potential to be a classic. Some of the best players from the top European leagues were on display, including the world’s most expensive player, Ronaldo. It was the Portuguese captain who came closest to scoring. He fired in a breathtaking shot 31 metres from goal that hit the post. That was the closest anyone came to finding the net. The first half was messy. Too many fouls stopped the play. Both teams knew losing this game would mean having to beat Brazil in their next match to stand a chance of going through to the next stage. The second half was more open but still saw very little goalmouth action. The introduction of Cote d’Ivoire’s Didier Drogba lifted the crowd but even the African player of the year couldn’t break down Portugal’s defense.
