France 0 Uruguay 0 (11th June, 2010)

France and Uruguay played out the World Cup’s first 0-0 draw on Friday night in Cape Town. It was a game of very little excitement or drama. In fact, it was pretty boring and not a good advertisement for World Cup football. The only real incident was when Uruguay substitute Lodeiro was sent off for a second yellow card with 10 minutes to go. Uruguay came closest to scoring in the first half when striker Diego Forlan’s shot was saved by the French goalie. France had a chance to snatch victory deep into injury time but Thierry Henry smashed his strike into the Uruguayan wall. Both teams will need to rethink their tactics if they want to progress to the next round. Uruguay face hosts South Africa on Wednesday, while France meet Mexico a day later.
