Germany 0 Serbia 1 (18th June, 2010)

The upsets keep coming at the World Cup and Serbia provided the latest one. They defeated 10-man Germany 1-0 to leave Group D wide open. Perhaps Germany were a little overconfident after winning their first game 4-0 and seeing Serbia lose to Ghana. Serbia’s Milan Jovanovic scored the game’s only goal – a lovely volley in the 38th minute. The game turned in Serbia’s favour a minute before that. The referee sent off German striker Miroslav Klose for a second yellow card. Neither of the cards seemed bad enough to get a caution. Germany will look back at the game and wonder how they missed so many chances. Lukas Podolski missed a penalty and a number of other German players really should have found the net. Germany must beat Ghana in their final match to progress to the last sixteen.
