South Africa 0 Uruguay 3 (16th June, 2010)

Uruguay dented South African hearts in Pretoria by beating the World Cup hosts 3-0. It was a very deserved victory. The South Americans played with a real purpose and were always looking for goals. This was matched by a solid defensive display that kept the Bafana Bafana at bay. The first goal was from Diego Forlan after 27 minutes – a thirty-metre shot that took a deflection into the goal. Forlan added a second from the penalty spot in the 75th minute. South Africa’s goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune brought down Luis Suarez in the box and was red-carded. Khune walked off the pitch in tears. By then it was all over. Alvaro Pereira headed in the third deep into injury time. South Africa must now hope for a miracle if they are to progress to the knockout stage.
