Uruguay 2 Netherlands 3 (6th July, 2010)

The Netherlands are the first team into the 2010 World Cup Final. They beat a Uruguay side who lacked ideas in attack and who defended in large numbers for most of the match. This is the third final for the Dutch and they will be hoping it’s third time lucky. Giovanni van Bronckhorst opened the scoring for the Netherlands after 18 minutes. He powered in an unstoppable shot from 30 metres that gave the goalkeeper no chance. Uruguay seemed unable to respond without the suspended Luis Suarez. However, they equalized just before half-time. The Dutch ‘keeper should have saved Diego Forlan’s 25-metre shot but it slipped past him into the back of the net. Two goals by Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben on 70 and 73 minutes put the Netherlands 3-1 up and helped calm their nerves. Maxi Pereira replied for Uruguay in injury time but it was too late.
