USA 1 Ghana 2 (26th June, 2010)

Ghana booked their place in the quarter finals with a 2-1 win over the USA. They become only the third African side ever to achieve this. They did it the hard way, needing extra time to see off a well-organized, battling USA side. Ghana opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Kevin-Prince Boateng gave them an early lead with a low strike after stealing the ball from USA midfielder Ricardo Clark. Ghana played the better football throughout the first half. They had too much creativity and energy for the Americans to handle. That changed after the break. The Ghanaians seemed to have run out of steam, especially after Landon Donavon equalized from the penalty spot on 62 minutes. The game went into extra time. Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan popped up to show great control in chesting a long ball and then putting it in the back of the net from a tight angle to put his team through.
