Blobfish are the ugliest animals
People voted online to make the blobfish the world's ugliest animal. They chose videos made by celebrities of ugly creatures. The blobfish is also the mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society (UAPS). The UAPS didn't want a cute animal as its mascot. It wants people to know that not-so-cute animals are also in danger. It said: "We've needed an ugly face for endangered animals for a long time." The blobfish will help people remember uglier animals. Blobfish live in the sea near Australia and New Zealand. They stay 600 to 1,200 metres deep. They grow up to 30cm long. They have large heads, small bodies and thin tails. They are a blob of jelly because they have no muscles. They float and swallow small crabs and shellfish. Humans do not eat blobfish, but fishermen kill thousands each year. They are caught in fishing nets. Scientists are worried the blobfish will be an endangered animal. |
