250 extra characters added to Internet

The Internet has 250 new characters, called "emoji". They look like small pictures. The letters, numbers and symbols we see online have a special code. Internet browsers read this code. We can use the new "emoji" code and make websites that look nicer. There are new symbols like a smiling face, a thumbs up, and a dove of peace.

"Emoji" started in Japan. Young people love using them. "Emoji" in Japanese means "picture-writing character". Phone and software companies must update their fonts. Then we can use the new "emoji". A lot of the new "emoji" are for Americans and Europeans. There is a hand signal from the U.S. TV series Star Trek.
