Algeria 0 Slovenia 1 (13th June, 2010)

Algeria 0 Slovenia 1 will not go down as one of the greatest games in history. It wasn’t quite as boring as France v Uruguay but it came close. Neither team played with any real purpose. Perhaps the players were suffering from nerves. This is the World Cup and a loss in the opening game makes it difficult to progress. The first half was just a series of corners that didn’t produce any goal scoring opportunities. Slovenia didn’t have an effort on goal until the 44th minute. The only piece of excitement came in the 79th minute when Slovenia’s Robert Koren scored. It was almost a replica of the USA’s goal against England – a pretty tame shot from 25 metres that the goalie failed to hold. The Algerian and England ‘keepers will probably blame their errors on the match ball.
