Chile 1 Switzerland 0 (21st June, 2010)

In a tense match in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium Chile went to the top of Group H with a hard-fought win over Switzerland. The match was marred by a referee who showed nine yellow cards (the first coming after one minute) and one red. The sending off of Switzerland’s Valon Behrami on 29 minutes looked like the match would sway in Chile’s favour. Chile took full advantage of the extra man and attacked the Swiss goal non-stop. The Swiss defended with great discipline and broke the World Cup record for the longest amount of time without letting in a goal - 567 minutes, stretching back to the 2006 Finals. Chile’s Mark Gonzalez changed that by heading in at the far post with 15 minutes to go. The victory is Chile’s first ever World Cup win against European opposition.
