Mexico 0 Uruguay 1 (22nd June, 2010)

A draw for both teams would be enough to take them through to the next round. Both teams played to win in a very entertaining encounter. Mexico came closest to scoring in the early stages when Andres Guardado hit the crossbar with a stunning shot from 30 metres out. Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan went close for the Uruguayans. Mexico’s Giovani Dos Santos caused a few problems for the Uruguayan defense and went close late in the first half. The only goal of the game came two minutes before the break. A beautiful cross-field pass was met just inside the six-yard box by Suarez, who simply had to tap it in with his head. Mexico came back towards the end of the match and dominated the last 20 minutes but couldn’t find the net. The result means both teams progress to the next round.
