Uruguay 2 South Korea 1 (26th June, 2010)

Uruguay are the first team through to the quarter-finals of the tournament. They won a very hard-fought and exciting match against a determined Korean team. The Koreans nearly went ahead in the fifth minute when Park Chu-Young’s beautifully curled free-kick rounded the Uruguayan wall and hit the post. Two minutes later Luis Suarez scored Uruguay’s first - a well-taken half-volley from a tight angle across the face of the goal. Uruguay seemed content with their one-goal lead as they sat back in their own half for an hour and soaked up non-stop Korean pressure. The waves of attacks by the Koreans finally paid off in the 68th minute when Lee Chung-Yong jumped above the Uruguayan defense to head the ball home. It looked like Korea had the advantage until Suarez curled in a brilliant shot from the edge of the penalty area with ten minutes to go.
