Police arrest a coconut (9th September, 2013)

Maldives police arrested a "suspicious" coconut. It had Arabic writing on it. It was a "sura" (a verse from the Koran). People said it was full of black magic. The magic might change the results of Saturday's national election. The police spoke to a "ruqyah" (a good magician). He said the coconut was fake and had no magic.

The police said it was a joke. People would understand this and not do it again. Many people on the Maldives believe in black magic. Teachers worried it would make students ill. A religious leader said it was time to stop black magic. He said it was a sin. He also said it caused problems for many families in the Maldives.
