American athletes at the Sochi Winter Olympics may be at risk if they wear their Team USA uniforms outside the security zones. Security is perhaps the tightest for any Olympics ever. It includes the "Ring of Steel" – checkpoints that stretch for 90 kilometres along the coast and 40 kilometres inland. Everyone will be X-rayed. Americans have been told not to "advertise" their nationality far from the Olympic venues.
There are fears that militants will attack the games. A group from Dagestan recently killed 34 people in two suicide bombings in Volgograd. President Vladimir Putin has promised teams that the games will be safe and successful. Meanwhile, security officials are hunting for three possible female suicide bombers. They think one of the women is in Sochi. There will be more threats as the games get closer. They will take place between February 7 and 23.
