The Reading / Listening - Level 1

Football players in England told a campaign group that racism and homophobia are common in their sport. Over 200 players took part in a survey from the Kick It Out campaign group. Over half of the players said they regularly saw racism and homophobia. A quarter said they got racist or homophobic comments. One in five said they saw or heard it from their teammates. Many players said the police should act more at football matches.

Kick It Out said things were slowly getting better. Many players complained about the slow progress. Retired Premier League player Paul Mortimer said there was less racism and homophobia now than before. He said discrimination is at all clubs across the country. He said both players and fans used racist and homophobic language. He added: "This kind of mentality is still in the dark ages. It has to move on."
