The Reading / Listening - Level 1

An Indian woman killed a leopard that attacked her near her village. Kamla Devi, 56, was fetching water when the cat jumped on her. She fought for 30 minutes and finally the cat died. She is now recovering in hospital from many bites and cuts. She also has three fractures on her hands. Devi said: "I thought I was dead but I did not lose patience and courageā€¦.I fought head on with it." She stabbed the leopard and smashed some of its teeth.

Doctors are surprised she survived. Most people do not survive a leopard attack. Her doctor said she has fractures on her hands and deep injuries on her head and legs. There are also bite marks all over her body. She needed over 100 stitches. She is now in a stable condition. One of her friends said: "She is very brave." A leopard expert said she had strong willpower. She killed the leopard and walked for one kilometre while badly bleeding.
