The Reading / Listening - Level 5

The coffee company Nespresso has ambitious plans to make its operations more sustainable. The company is part of the Nestlé group of companies. It makes and sells espresso coffee machines and the containers of coffee needed for the machine. Its new initiative is called 'The Positive Cup'. This aims to make one of its ranges of coffee using totally sustainable methods. It will also help poor coffee farmers. It will invest $16 million in Ethiopia, Kenya and South Sudan. Nespresso said it, "aims to protect the future of the highest quality coffees and secure the livelihoods of the farmers".

A main part of the campaign is to recycle all of the aluminium coffee containers used in the machines. It will "increase recycling rates" and become "100 per cent carbon neutral" by 2020. It will also plant trees to reduce its carbon footprint. Nespresso's CEO said sustainability has always been designed to do more than minimise damage. Actor George Clooney said the investment in South Sudan is important, especially because of the war there. He said the investment will provide, "much-needed income for hundreds of farmers and their families living in coffee communities".
