The Reading / Listening - Level 4

A man is suing an all-women's university in Japan. It rejected his application because he is male. The man says this is discrimination against his gender. He says allowing female-only students is unconstitutional. Japan's constitution says that all citizens have an equal right to education. He wants the university to pay him 660,000 yen in damages for his suffering. It is the first time someone has sued a women's university over this issue.

The man thinks he will win. He said the university was his only option to be a dietician. He said it would be difficult if he had to go to a university far away. The man's lawyer said women-only universities are not needed today. In the past, they helped women "who had fewer opportunities for education". A university official said: "We have a 91-year history….We are determined to continue to…prepare women for leadership roles."
