It is the highest award that can be given to a civilian. It recognizes people who have made, "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant...endeavors".



President Trump said: "America is blessed to have the most skill, passion and talent of anywhere on earth. We are truly a great nation...that is doing really, really well right now." The White House described Elvis as, "an enduring American icon". It added: "Presley defined American culture to billions of adoring fans around the world. Fusing gospel, country, and rhythm and blues, the star created a sound all his own." Elvis is one of the biggest musicians of the 20th century and the best-selling solo artist ever. Other musical stars to get the award include Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder.
