The House of Representatives in the USA has impeached Donald Trump. It is the third time in history for a president to be impeached. President Trump is charged with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. These are both acts of "high crimes and misdemeanors". They could lead to his removal from power. This is unlikely as the US Congress is Republican-controlled and requires a majority of two-thirds. Democrat Nancy Pelosi said: "If we do not act now, we would be [careless] in our duty. It is tragic that the President's [unwise] actions make impeachment necessary."
The impeachment is the result of a long and bitter three-month investigation into allegations that President Trump pressured Ukraine to investigate his political rivals. Mr Trump said the probe is the greatest witch-hunt in history. Republicans have reacted angrily. A Republican compared the impeachment to how Pontius Pilate tried Jesus, but said Pilate was kinder. Mr Trump said: "The Democrats are surrendering their majority, their dignity. They look like a bunch of fools." He tweeted: "They are not after me; they are after you."
