The Reading / Listening - Biodiversity Loss - Level 1

Australia has many amazing creatures and plants. It's famous for them. However, scientists have reported a "shocking" loss of biodiversity. The government released a depressing report about this. It says there is a decrease in biodiversity, an increase in habitat loss, and more pollution. Australia has had drought, fires and floods recently. These have killed many animals. Climate change is also damaging Australia's ecosystems.

Australia publishes its report every five years. Each report is worse than the one before. A conservation group said the government is not taking action to help. It said: "The environment is getting worse and worse…because we're not taking…action." Australia has lost many mammal species. More than 100 species are now extinct. An environmentalist said the report was "a wake-up call". It shows the damage humans are doing to the world.
