France 1 South Africa 2 (22nd June, 2010)

For a while in this game people dared believe the impossible was about to happen – that South Africa could beat France by a wide margin to qualify for the next round. It started well for them when Bongani Khumalo headed in after 21 minutes, even though it went in off his arm. Disaster happened for France five minutes later when Yoan Gourcuff was sent off for an aerial challenge on MacBeth Sibiya – another horrendous refereeing decision. South Africa’s second came after 37 minutes. Katlego Mphela bundled the ball over the line. News that Uruguay had scored against Mexico in the other group game brought a roar from the crowd. South Africa needed two second half goals against ten men and they would be second in the group. Instead, France scored to end that dream. The French came bottom.
