New York is officially the world's most fashionable city. It won the 2014 Top Global Fashion Capital contest. London won the prize in 2011 and 2012, but was third this year, behind Paris. Los Angeles was the fourth trendiest city, while Barcelona closely followed in fifth place. Italy's highest-placed city was Rome, in sixth place. Milan, long established as a centre of style, finished twelfth. Bekka Payack, a New York-based fashion director, said: "New York City…earned its Top Global Fashion Capital ranking through its disciplined, methodical yet creative approach."

New York being crowned winner coincides with the city's upcoming Fashion Week. The fashion world will visit for a week of glamour. Supermodels will walk the catwalks and parade fashions from leading designers. Ms Payack spoke of how new cities around the world are making a name for themselves in haute couture. She said there was a "creative energy" worldwide with fashion providing jobs, income and wealth. She added there was a lot of "prestige with exporting your fashion sense to the world". Cities like Shanghai, St. Petersburg and New Delhi all did well in the contest.
