The Reading / Listening - Level 1

Elephants are in danger. Hunters kill them and sell the ivory from their tusks. The USA wants to stop this and protect elephants. On Thursday, the USA burnt 6,000 kilograms of ivory, including carvings and jewellery. The USA wants to tell people who kill elephants to stop the killing. Many elephants in Africa are dying. This is difficult to stop. The USA will give $1 million to anyone with information about a group in Laos that buys and sells ivory.

Conservationists (people who want to protect animals and the Earth) say poaching will stop if it is unprofitable. If the killers cannot make money, they will not kill elephants. A conservation group said: "Any time we can remove ivory from the marketplace, it’s a win for elephants." A worldwide ban on selling and buying ivory started in 1989. It has helped elephants, but the world needs to do much more.
