The Reading / Listening - Level 1

European leaders used rap to win votes. They want young people to vote for them. More young people aren't interested in elections. Ten years ago, 87 per cent of young people voted but in the last election, just 65 per cent voted. Younger politicians made a group called EU40. They said young people would listen to their raps. There was "a freestyle hip-hop battle" called the "Battle For Your Vote". The aim was to get young people to vote.

The BBC reported on the battle. It said politicians had the microphone for a minute to get some support. One party tried to interest young people by saying: "If you like money, vote for [us]". There were short raps on many topics, including unemployment and immigration. Each rapper said what they would do about these problems. They used short, rhyming sentences instead of long speeches.
