Tooth decay is the biggest reason for U.K. children going to hospital. Britain's health service just reported that 500 children a week go to hospital because of sugary drinks and poor dental hygiene. Fruit juice and fizzy drinks (sodas) are the biggest reasons. Researchers said over 25,000 children needed to have teeth removed last year. Some children had all 20 of their milk teeth removed because of tooth decay. Most kids had four to eight teeth removed. Sugary drinks and fruit juices are also leading to higher levels of obesity in kids.

The report found that the number of children aged zero to four having teeth pulled out increased from 8,060 in 2011 to 8,758 last year. A children's dentist said there are several reasons for this. One reason is very painful teeth. Another reason is that dentists cannot save the tooth. A final reason is the child has many decayed teeth that need to be removed. In all of these cases, children need an injection that puts them to sleep so they can have an operation. A health expert told parents to give children water instead of fruit juice and fizzy drinks.
