British police are prosecuting motorists for taking photos of a crash scene. This is the first time British drivers will be prosecuted for "rubbernecking" – looking back at a horrible scene, usually while driving a car. Four rubberneckers slowed down to photo a crash on the other side of the road. Other drivers had to brake to avoid hitting the rubberneckers. Police said the rubberneckers had acted "irresponsibly" in slowing down to take photos. Police will charge them with driving without care and attention, and without reasonable consideration for other road users.
A police officer said that although nobody was injured in the collision, rubberneckers caused other drivers had to brake or take other action and slow down. She said the rubberneckers, "showed no regard for their own or of other people’s safety, as they used their mobile phones to record or video the wreckage as they passed". She also said the drivers were not in control of their car. She added that: "One of the causes of serious injury and fatal collisions is the use of mobile telephones." She asked motorists to lock their phones away when driving.
