The Reading / Listening - Electricity - Level 1

People in the UK could get free electricity this summer because power companies have too much energy. They can generate more than enough energy on sunny days. They do not want to waste it. In summer, there is more electricity from solar panels. Energy suppliers say people could use electrical goods like washing machines and dishwashers and charge electric cars for free when the sun is shining.

The idea for free power came from the UK's National Energy System Operator (NESO). It is responsible for "delivering the energy of today and the future" and for reaching carbon zero. NESO explained what was good about its new idea. It said it would "reward consumers and businesses for flexible electricity use". A spokesman from National Gas believes there could be free electricity this summer even if there is war in the Middle East.
