The Reading / Listening

The 2014 FIFA World Cup is well under way and there have been some great games already. The tournament opened on June the 12th with a ceremony at the Arena de Sao Paulo. The opening ceremony was very colourful and had a cast of 660 dancers. Soon after, the first match took place, between hosts Brazil and Croatia. It was an exciting game that Brazil won 3-1. Brazilian superstar Neymar scored twice. Croatia were very angry that the referee gave Brazil a penalty they thought was not a penalty, and disallowed a goal that they thought was a goal.

The next day saw a repeat of the 2010 World Cup Final, between world champions Spain and a very strong Netherlands team. The Dutch shocked Spain by thrashing them 5-1. Holland striker Robin Van Persie scored a spectacular header, which could be goal of the tournament. In other matches, Italy defeated England 2-1, and Lionel Messi scored for Argentina as they scraped past Bosnia-Herzrgovina 2-1. None of the eleven games so far has ended in a draw. The average number of goals per game is over three. The France-Honduras game saw the first use of goal-line technology.
