1 million Syrian child refugees (24th August, 2013)

There are now one million Syrian child refugees. The United Nations called this "shameful". The children left Syria because it is too dangerous. They went to Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon. Some are in Europe and North Africa. The UN said the children are not numbers. They lost their home and face horrors we cannot understand. Two million children in Syria have no home. Over 740,000 of Syria's 2 million refugees are children under eleven.

Syria's civil war started in 2011. The UN says it is the worst refugee crisis since Rwanda in 1994. It said Syria's youth are losing their homes, family members and futures. After they cross a border to safety, they are shocked, sad and have no hope. The children are in danger. Many are used for child labour. Others are sold for early marriages or for the sex trade. Not many of the children go to school. The UN said just 118,000 of them are in education.
