The Reading / Listening - Level 1

The BreakingNewsEnglish.com site says news is good for students. It asked teachers and students about using news to learn English. Almost everyone said it was important. One student enjoyed using news because it is real. He remembered when he saw a headline on the board and was surprised that it was that day's breaking news. Another student liked news more than other topics. She felt good when she understood English news and "international vocabulary".

Teachers liked using news in their lessons. They made listening slower to help their students. Teachers said news was good to help with speaking. Students talked non-stop about news of their own country or city. News is useful because students have background knowledge about it from their own language. Teachers also liked doing many kinds of activities, such as role plays and games. One teacher said news was "unhealthy for students".
