READING:

A 22-year-old has been elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the UK. Sam Carling won the seat in Thursday's general election by a very slim majority. Mr Carling, from the Labour Party, narrowly beat his Conservative Party rival by 39 votes. He will now sit in Parliament and represent the interests of the people in his Cambridge seat. At Westminster, he will be called the "baby of the House". Carling graduated from Cambridge University. He called his victory a "political earthquake". He hopes he will encourage young people to enter politics, and "tackle apathy".

Mr Carling became interested in politics after he saw social and economic decline in the UK. He grew up in "a deprived area" in the north of England. The Conservative Party had promised to turn the north into an economic "powerhouse". However, it did not keep its promises. Carling said he is worried about empty shops on high streets that used to be "thriving" hubs, but are now wastelands. He hopes he can help undo 14 years of Conservative misrule, scandal and corruption. Britain's public services are in chaos and people are worse off than they were 14 years ago.
