The Reading / Listening - Oxford Street - Level 1

A famous London shopping street is now only for people. No cars, buses, trucks, etc. can drive on it. Oxford Street is known all over the world. It used to be full of traffic. The Mayor of London decided to make around one kilometre of the street only for people. However, delivery trucks can use it after midnight. The mayor hopes many shoppers will go to the street. He called it a very important event for London. He will plant more trees on the street.

Many people are happy that the area will be less polluted. The mayor said a traffic-free Oxford Street would help make a better and greener city. Around half a million people visit the street every day. However, many Londoners are unhappy. A local official said: "Traffic will be pushed to the small streets nearby causing economic and environmental harm." A magazine warned that life for car drivers would be harder.
