The Reading / Listening - Oxford Street - Level 2

London's most famous shopping street has been pedestrianized. No cars, buses, trucks, or motorbikes can drive on it. Oxford Street is well known all over the world. It used to be full of traffic. The Mayor of London decided to make it pedestrian-only. Around one kilometre of the street is only for people, not cars. However, delivery trucks can use the area after midnight. The mayor hopes the pedestrianization will bring shoppers back to the area. He called it a very important event for London. He will plant more trees along the street, and add more seats and tables.

Some people are happy and others are unhappy about the pedestrianization. Many people are happy that the area will be less polluted. The mayor said a traffic-free Oxford Street would help make a better, greener, and richer London. Around half a million people visit the street every day. However, many Londoners are unhappy no cars can go on the street. Local official Tim Barnes said: "Traffic will be pushed to the small streets nearby causing economic and environmental harm." A magazine warned that life for car drivers would be harder.
