READING:

Protestors in Albania have clashed with police over a planned luxury resort. Police responded with tear gas and water cannon. The resort is backed by Donald Trump's son-in-law. The protests are being dubbed the 'flamingo revolution'. This is because the planned complex is in a wildlife area that is home to thousands of flamingos. It would destroy habitat used by the birds. Protestors want Albania's prime minister to resign or stop the resort.

The resort could be built on the Albanian coast. However, there is neither planning permission nor an environmental impact assessment. Despite this, bulldozers are on the site and large areas have been fenced off. Woodland and sand dunes have been cleared. In addition, a 7 km-long road has been built. Albania's government said the resort would transform the economy. However, the resort could be bad for Albania's EU membership.
