READING:
Protestors in Albania have clashed with police over a planned luxury resort on a nature reserve. Police responded with tear gas and water cannon. The proposed resort is backed by Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. The daily protests are being dubbed the 'flamingo revolution'. This is because the planned hotel complex is in a wildlife area that is home to thousands of flamingos. Demonstrators say construction would destroy habitat used by migratory birds. Many protestors are calling for Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign. They want him to stop the resort going ahead.
The resort could be built on the coast of Albania's Adriatic Sea. However, there is no planning permission and an environmental impact assessment has not been conducted. Despite this, many bulldozers are on the site and large areas have been fenced off. Woodland has been cut down and sand dunes have been cleared. A 7 km-long road has also been constructed. Albania's government said the resort was necessary to transform the country's economy. However, the European Union has warned construction could cause problems for Albania's EU membership.
